Beyond the strength assessment, the Hour Pillar also carries an important segment of the Ten Gods structure. The Ten Gods in the Hour Pillar are generally associated with a person's inner mental state, later years in life, and affinity with children. Without this piece, the chart's interpretation in these areas becomes blurred.
Another often-overlooked issue is that certain special chart formations depend on the Hour Pillar to be confirmed. For instance, a "Food God Controlling the Killer" formation requires the Food God to appear in a specific position, and a "Wounded Officer Paired with Seal" formation requires the Seal Star to be prominently placed in the Hour Pillar. Without the Hour Pillar, these formations are left in limbo — neither confirmed nor ruled out.
So Can You Still Get a Reading?
Yes, but it depends on what you expect from a "reading."
The Year, Month, and Day Pillars already provide a wealth of information. If you simply want a general sense of your life's trajectory and tendencies, three pillars are enough. If you're looking for answers as specific as "Is the second half of this year a good time to switch jobs?" or "Can this relationship actually lead to marriage?" — a chart without the Hour Pillar will temper the practitioner's confidence, and it should also encourage you to hold the conclusions with a bit more flexibility.
The Impact on Daily Fortune Readings
This is something most people don't realize.
The "daily fortune" readings commonly found online, when based on BaZi, typically reference the interaction between each day's Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch and your personal chart. The "Daily Stem-Branch" is the unique pair assigned to each day, and it generates relationships of support, control, combination, and clash with your eight characters.
The Hour Pillar plays the role of the "closest layer of response" in this interaction. Major Luck cycles shift every ten years, Annual Luck shifts every year, Monthly Luck shifts every month, and Daily Luck shifts every day. As the innermost layer of the chart, the Hour Pillar's interaction with the daily cycle often reflects the most subtle fluctuations in a person's state on any given day.
Without the Hour Pillar, daily fortune calculations can only be based on the Year, Month, and Day Pillars. The general direction won't be far off, but on certain specific days, potential clashes or combinations between the Hour Pillar and the daily cycle become completely invisible.
In practical terms, your daily fortune readings become somewhat "blunted." Good days are still broadly good, bad days are still broadly bad, but those subtle turning points and moments that deserve extra attention may slip through unnoticed.
If you're someone who regularly consults daily fortunes to inform your decisions, knowing this limitation is better than not knowing it. It doesn't mean the readings are useless — it's a reminder to treat them as directional guidance rather than precise instructions.
How to Track Down Your Birth Time
If you're willing to put in a little effort, your birth time isn't necessarily lost forever.
The most direct approach is asking family members, but the way you ask matters. Don't ask "What time was I born?" outright, because most older relatives don't store this kind of memory in precise clock terms. Instead, ask about events. "Was it daytime or nighttime?" "Was Dad there when I was born? Did he rush over after work?" "Was it after breakfast?" "Was it light outside yet?"
Through these event-based descriptions, you can usually narrow the range down to within two or three double-hour periods.
Another option is to request your birth certificate from the household registration office. Some hospitals recorded the time of birth on the certificate; others didn't. Record formats from earlier decades weren't standardized, but it costs almost nothing to try.
